Flo needs to mix things up

1st off I’m a fan of Dustin Jarrett and Ben Shelton, they do a good job, but I’m also burned out on them as a Flo subscriber. They are involved in The Dome, Wild West Shootout, Flo Night in America, Eldora LM events, and now that they have joined James Essex on a good portion of the Lucas schedule….I want to hear something different.
i get that series have their announcers, but dominating so many dirt events on Flo just has me wanting to hear a new voice sometimes.

They do a good job. Now, I didn't like getting gaslighted last night about how good the track was while everyone had to run in a line on the top, but that was my only complaint.

They hype how good the track is at most shows, even when it clearly isn’t. I get that they don’t want to denigrate a track and all, but the easiest way to avoid that is to just not mention track conditions at all.

Like you, I really enjoy listening to Dustin & Ben. They are true professionals. But after reading your post, and seeing just how many events they cover during the year for FLO I tend to agree with you. Not a knock against them, but maybe it is time to add some new voices to the broadcasts. A Flo employee who I miss on the broadcasts is Chet Christner. He is one of the best. I know he is known for calling open wheel races, but I have heard him do many forms of dirt racing announcing. I would to see him come out of retirement for a few DLM races a year to change things up a bit.

To me, when Ben Shelton is in the house, you know you’re watching a pretty important race. On the other hand, if I never have to listen to Dustin Jarrett again, I’d be pretty happy. He always seemed to be biased against Bloomquist. Plus he seems to be completely in love with himself and thinks he’s a part of the “show” when he’s not.

They all do a good job but a guy I’d love to hear more of is Chris Stepan. Always listened to him on ppvs such as the USA nationals back in the day but first time I heard him live was at Pennsboro this fall and he does an excellent job.

Oh baby it sounds like you are asking for wholesale changes . While I agree and would love hear different voices sometimes too I just dont see it happening. Its a small industry and not many willing to travel that much that can do the broadcasts. It would be nice to have Weaver on the show more with his technical/driver point of view for sure. Lucas used to have a cut away car that I enjoyed seeing to help understand thing but that pretty much died when Argabright left. I will take Chet Christener any day, that man can entertain.

I would love to see more clips during the downtime at the these races with stories about maybe the track they are at or more candid conversations with the drivers/crews/owners very similar to the way NASCAR pre race shows are. I mean these guys are always on the road with a camera crew. Take the Road to Eldora concept and make more clips to show. But then again nobody asked my opinion...oh wait, yes Flo did, they sent me a corporate survey.

I try to look at the big picture. I remember in the 90s saying how great it would be if these races were on TV and now they are. Therefore there are many nights I mute the TV and play some music as I watch when I dont want to hear the one liners and hear who is texting the announcers.

I hate the “shout outs” as well.
Send the pit reporter to the pits during the downtime instead of seeing commercial break on the screen.

I agree with Pennsboro32. Chris Stepan is super solid and has been a favorite of mine as well for over 20 years. I’ll get to hear him in a couple of weeks in Az at the Early Thaw event in Casa Grande.

As far as Ben and DJ go, I think they do a good job. It’s possible some might be tired of listening to them since it’s been several (longer) shows in a week, and hearing some of the same rinse and repeat takes and calls on the broadcast. It’s all good for me as IMO there as alot worse announcers out there. I will say I was hoping to hear Dale McDowell on one of the broadcasts during this event, but I’m not sure he’s still in Vado.

You guys need to remember who is in charge of Flo Racing Division- Michael Rigsby the founder of DOD. I am sure he and Ben/DJ are very close friends- therefore Loyal to their frienship as well as business relationship.

If there was one guy that I would like to see in the late model booth, it would be Tony LaPorta who is currently with High Limit. Reminds me a lot of Brian Lohnes who I think is the best announcer in any form of motorsports.
I also agree with the track assessments by DJ and Ben. They are over obsessed with bragging up a particular track. I think they take the social media criticism too seriously.
The hotsauce hotpit area is growing old as well. I'm sure they generate sponsor $$ from it but how many times a night is enough?
