    Tire rules also keep the playing field equal. In the past, certain drivers could get compounds not available to all....

      An open tire rule would only benefit the well funded teams and crush the small teams. The high profile teams could afford to bring multiply compounds and brands, and switch back and forth throughout the night depending on the track conditions. In theory, it evens the playing field the way it is right now.

          Short of sending tires to the lab, the only other possible solution is to have the guys buy their tires at the track the night of the event. They have done that a couple times at Eldora I think & IIRC Lucas did it at the North South 100 once about 10 years ago.

          That is a very cost prohibitive solution for other than crown jewel events. Hoosier isn't sending their big tire truck for a $10k to win event. I don't see another way to enforce the tire rules without sending them to a lab.

          Of course the other option is to let em do whatever they want to the tires but then every race would turn into a train race by the time the feature starts as so much rubber would be laid down.
