Those who have closely followed developments over the years in the never-ending struggle between Israel and the Palestinian people are aware of the tendency of terrorists to utilize tunnels to gain entry into Israel from the Gaza Strip territory.
Whenever Israeli Defense Forces find such tunnels that are used by terror groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad, they destroy them as soon as possible, and that appears to be just what happened on Monday, according to Israel National News.
It is believed that at least seven Palestinian militants were killed when the tunnel near the city of Khan Yunis was destroyed, though accounts vary on the total death toll. Another dozen individuals were also injured.
“(The IDF) neutralized a terror tunnel leading into southern Israel from the vicinity of Khan Yunis,†stated IDF spokesman Jonathan Conricus. “The tunnel was detonated from within Israel, close to the security fence. The (IDF’s) actions are in light of this grave and unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty.â€
It was believed that the tunnel ran deep into Israeli territory, and the IDF has deployed additional forces to the area in case of any further security incidents.

According to The Times of Israel, the Gaza Health Ministry — which is run by Hamas — declared this incident to be the deadliest such event since the end of the 2014 conflict between Hamas in Gaza and Israel.
“The explosion took place inside Israeli territory,†explained IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee. “The majority of the dead were activists that entered the tunnel after it was exploded and died in the Gaza Strip, and not as a result of the explosion.â€
Of course, the destruction of the tunnel that was being built cooperatively by Islamic Jihad and Hamas has sparked new tensions in the restive region, prompting Israel to deploy some of their Iron Dome rocket interceptors to the region alongside the additional troops.
“We are not interested in an escalation but we are ready for all scenarios,†Adraee stated.
But the Islamic Jihad group is interested in an escalation and called for an immediate coordinated military strike against their enemy, likely due to the fact that they reportedly lost two senior officers — the central Gaza commander and his deputy — in the explosion and resulting tunnel collapse.
Surprisingly, even as they denounced the destruction of the tunnel and the loss of some of their fighters that were inside, Hamas has urged caution in moving forward, perhaps partly in remembrance of how their last conflict with Israel played out, but also out of deference to Egypt, who have taken the lead role in mediating a unity deal among the disparate Palestinian groups like Hamas in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.
In speaking about the destruction of the tunnel network, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that it was the result of “breakthrough technology,†though he declined to get more specific as to what that technology may be.
“I told you many times before that we are developing breakthrough technology to deal with the tunnel threat,†stated Netanyahu at a Likud party meeting. “We are implementing it. Today, we located a tunnel and we destroyed it.â€

He added that Israel holds Hamas accountable for any activity out of Gaza that harms Israeli citizens, and stated bluntly, “Whoever hurts us, we hurt them.â€
It is thought by some that the new technology Netanyahu alluded to may be ground-penetrating radar used to find the tunnels, but some also suspect he may have been alluding to new advanced munitions that were used to destroy the tunnel.
It didn’t help that supposition either when initial reports stating the tunnel was destroyed with a “controlled demolition†were later adjusted by spokesman Conricus to make clear that the IDF would have no comment on the type of munitions used in the incident.
Regardless of how they found and destroyed the tunnel from Gaza into Israel, it is a good thing that they did, as terrorists would undoubtedly have utilized that tunnel to bring terror and death to the Israeli people as soon as they were capable of doing so.
