A US communications ship was off the shore of Israel monitoring what was going on between Israel and Egypt. Israel had overflown the Liberty for several hours prior to the attack, even getting close enough to wave... Israel decided Egypt was 2 years from being ready for a war so they opted to attack them on the Sinai and pretend Egypt was threatening them. Part of this plan included sinking the U.S.S. Liberty and killing everyone on board, with unmarked planes and using Torpedo boats, then blame Egypt and draw America into their war. The Israeli's returned in unmarked jets and first took out the radio antenna, followed by the flag. Now listing, burnt, shut up and smoking the Liberty finally managed to get out a distress call which was answered immediately, jets fighters dispatched from nearby aircraft carrier. Before these planes could render aide, Robert McNamara called them back. The Captain thought this was due to the fact they were outfitted with nuclear weapons, so he immediately had them rearmed conventional and relaunched them. After relaunching he notified McNamara that he'd resent the jets. McNamara called them back again and LBJ later said of this he wouldn't have his friend(Israel) in the middle east embarrassed over some nonsense.
