I never thought I would see an American president trust Russia's spy agencies over the US agencies. Ronald Reagan must be rolling in his grave.

House Speaker Paul Ryan responded with a statement echoed by many senior Republican officials: "There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world."

"The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals," Ryan, R-Wis., continued. "The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spoke to reporters as he entered the Capitol on Monday. "As I've said repeatedly, the Russians are not our friends and I entirely agree with the assessment of our intelligence community."

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, R-Tenn., was even more blunt, telling reporters on Capitol Hill that Trump's performance "made us look, as a nation, like a pushover. ... I did not think this was a good moment for our country."

The retiring Corker, who has been a frequent critic of the president, went on to say that Putin "gained a tremendous amount" from the Helsinki summit and Trump's kowtowing and that "I would guess [Putin's] having caviar right now" to celebrate.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., had the strongest GOP statement, bashing Trump in the immediate aftermath of the news conference. McCain called it "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trump's naiveté, egotism, false equivalence and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake."

"No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant," McCain continued. The Republicans' 2008 presidential nominee has been absent from the Senate as he undergoes treatment for brain cancer.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. — McCain's close friend who has become an unlikely Trump ally as of late — called the news conference a "missed opportunity" and said the president's performance will "create far more problems than it solves."

Top Republicans voiced faith in U.S. intelligence, while some criticized Trump directly following his news conference. Top Democrats questioned whether Russia has damaging information on Trump.

When asked if he would hold Russia accountable for any of its past actions, Trump deflected and deferred. President Trump’s unwillingness to stand up to Russia on this issue only serves to weaken the Western alliance and encourage further Russian incursions into the territory of sovereign nations now that Putin knows Trump will give him a pass.

Most importantly, on election meddling, Trump refused to stand with U.S. intelligence and charge Putin with interference, saying he doesn’t “see any reason why it would be” the Russians carrying out the illegal meddling.

For a sitting U.S. president to say publicly that he believes a foreign leader over his own intelligence team is shocking and admonishable. At a time when our democracy faces grave threats, it is deeply troubling that the president would side with the very country who attacked us.

Additionally, Trump’s failure to distinguish between campaign collusion and Russia’s blatant attack on our democracy allowed Putin to sow more discord during the press conference.

“Could you name a single fact that would definitely prove the collusion? This is utter nonsense, just like the president recently mentioned,” Putin told a reporter.

Trump, and our country for that matter, can only win against Putin if we are assertive about American goals and our values. President Trump failed to accomplish that on Monday.

Instead of standing up to Putin, Trump offered to cooperate with Russia on some of the very issues that Russia is causing.

As some very wise analysts have noted, this strategy is like allowing a criminal to investigate his own crimes. It is foolish and naive and President Trump must simply do better going forward.

President Trump, and our country for that matter, can only win against Putin if we are assertive about American goals and our values. Trump failed to accomplish that in Helsinki on Monday.

The truth of the matter is that Trump knew exactly what he was doing. The Washington establishment along with the loony Dems do not understand common sense. Why meet with Putin to call him names and threaten him? What does that gain? Makes more sense to see if he can get him to co-operate with areas they can agree on. Like Nukes, Syria, N. Korea, radical Islam. Russia meddles in our elections, China hacks us, Saudis abuse women and run afoul of any kind of decent treatment of many in their country. Trump's job is to protect the US and he is doing a great job of it so far. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Trump has been the greatest leader of my lifetime. He has done more for the US than any President this side of Reagan. Haters will hate no matter what, who cares!!!

I would say kissing Putin right on the Twink like Trump did yesterday qualifies .Code § 2381 - TreasonWhoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.(June 25, 1948, ch. 645, 62 Stat. 807; Pub. L. 103–322, title XXXIII, § 330016(2)(J), Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 2148.)
