It was a two hour meeting between an internet tough guy and a former KGB agent. Trump has shown repeatedly that he crumples when face-to-face with the person he has been criticizing. Whatever may have been said between them in private, his public statements standing beside Putin is what other nations see and is the messaging that is being sent to the world. And those public statements make Trump look like a pushover.

Trump seems to be unable to consider the idea that Russia could have interfered with the election without there being collusion.

The president can be assertive without bashing. Trump should have stood there and denounced the Russian interference in our elections. He should have denounced Russia's invasion of Crimea. He should have denounced Russia's use of a nerve agent. That could all have been done without bashing Putin. Instead, Trump acquiesced.
