Social Security and Medicare. Two things you have to pay for, whether you like it or not.
1) You have to buy Social Security benefits, whether you want to or not. Many would prefer to opt out and purchase their own retirement plans, but alas, you have NO option but to PURCHASE the government run Social Security retirement plan. Now, we do call that a TAX, because you have to purchase it, but the reality is you are buying into the government run retirement plan, of which there are THOUSANDS of privately held and run retirement plan options you could purchase on the free market. If government handled SS the same way they are handling Health Insurance, then you would have the option to not purchase the SS plan and pay a penalty. And as the Supreme Court has stated, a penalty is not a tax, but it is "like" a tax when it comes to health care.
2) Medicare. There are plenty of health care options out there, we don't need to even discuss the myriad of health care coverage available. However, you HAVE to purchase Medicare. Whether you like it or not, you have to pay your contributions to Medicare, the government run health care plan. You don't get the option to opt out of it, you can't say "no thanks, I have my own health care plan, I don't need it." Nope, you work and get a paycheck, whether or not you are self employed or work for someone else, you get to buy Medicare. Now if they decide to run Medicare the way the Health Insurance coverage is working, you may just get that option one day and get to opt out for a different private plan option, or maybe pay a penalty if you decide not to pay into Medicare at all. But its something you have to purchase, government mandated contributions to a government run health care program.
But there are your two things you have to purchase just for being American. A government run retirement plan, and a government run health plan, whether you want it or not. And in both cases, you could purchase either on the open market instead, but in both cases, you HAVE to purchase the government version of it. Just for being born in the good old USA.
Now, if you really want to expand on your idea that government shouldn't force you to buy anything you don't want to pay for, then go fish without a license and get fined, go drive without a license and get fined, go build a new house without permits and get fined. Of course, all of those things are optional, but if you want to live in America and do them, then guess what? You pay the government for the privilege, or pay the fine for doing it illegally.
Just like health insurance. You can purchase it, or pay a penalty for not purchasing it. But if you want to live in America, then pony up, because everyone gets sick at some point, there isn't a single person alive who hasn't needed health care, and as such, everyone should be paying something. No more free lunches.
