Penalty Announcement: Kenseth suspended 2 races; Patrick fined: Matt Kenseth , the driver of the #20 car, has been penalized for an infraction that occurred during the Nov. 1 race at Martinsville Speedway. This is a Behavioral Penalty (Sections 12.1, 12.8). Kenseth has been suspended from NASCAR through the completion of the next two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship events and placed on NASCAR probation for a six-month period following issuance of the penalty notice.
"Based upon our extensive review, we have concluded that the #20 car driver, who is no longer in the Chase, intentionally wrecked the #22 car driver, a Chase-eligible competitor who was leading the race at the time,"said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "The #20 car was nine laps down, and eliminated the #22 car's opportunity to continue to compete in the race.
"Additionally, we factored aspects of safety into our decision, and also the fact that the new Chase elimination format puts a premium on each and every race. These actions have no place in NASCAR."

Funny thing. Patrick does the same thing, and skates with a hand slap. OK, it is who are and who you know. If Matt gets two, Patrick should get one at least for doing the same thing.

I don't have a problem with NASCAR assigning penalty.... that's fine....but they need to be absolutely consistent. And they ain't even close...

                  Here's what I heard:

"Based upon our extensive review of the Kansas incident, we have concluded that the #20 car driver is old and on his way out in NASCAR and is no longer in the Chase as he was intentionally wrecked by the #22 car driver, a young up and coming racer who has an appeal with a certain element attractive to NASCAR and LGBT activists, at Kansas when both were Chase-eligible competitors. The #20 was leading the race at the time,"said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief favoritism officer. "The #22 car was unable to pass cleanly, so he eliminated the #20 car's opportunity to continue to compete in the race."

"Additionally, we factored aspects of safety into our decision, and also the fact that the new Chase elimination format puts a premium on each and every race. These actions have no place in NASCAR but we will overlook it just this once because we all know what a sweet boy the #22 driver is, and how cute he is when he smiles, and how certain folks just wanna squeeze those dimples! And really, speedways aren't that dangerous, it's not like anyone has ever died wrecking on one."

O'Donell went on to say ""Based upon our extensive review of Martinsville, we have concluded that the #20 car driver, who is no longer in the Chase and again, will probably be out of NASCAR in less than a few years, intentionally wrecked the #22 car driver, a Chase-eligible competitor who was leading the race at the time and frankly, a guy we really like and feel sorry for and think would make a great Champion" said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer. "The #20 car was nine laps down this time, instead of leading the race, when he eliminated the #22 car's opportunity to continue to compete in the race, just like the #22 did when the #20 was leading the race at Kansas. The difference we see is we like little Joey, our other Rainbow Warrior is on his farewell tour, and he's so cute and has so much future sponsor potential and we love Roger Penske, he has a great yacht to party on. So of course, his actions cannot be tolerated by the good old boys... errrr.. NASCAR."

"Additionally, we factored aspects of safety into our decision, and also the fact that the new Chase elimination format puts a premium on each and every race. As Martinsville is known as The Graveyard because of the incredibly high speeds, g forces, and potential threat to life and limb should a competitor hit a wall there, we cannot tolerate any deliberate spinning of a competitor at such a highly dangerous venue. Basically, if you want to wreck someone, don't do it on the half mile, do it at a speedway where it is much much safer. These actions have no place in NASCAR this time... maybe next time.... or the time after.... but it depends on what the first letter of your last name is and if it occurs during a waxing or waning moon..... lot of things have to be factored into these decisions...stuff you wouldn't understand."

Dumbest part of the whole thing is NASCAR invokes "safety" and "the Chase" as their grounds for punishing Mat, but completely forget about it when Joey wrecked Mat.

So, safety matters, when it comes to one of their favorites, but it doesn't matter when its not.

So, the chase elimination factor matters when it comes to their favorites, but it doesn't matter when its not.

Its such a ridiculous blatant example of the ever moving standards in NASCAR. People quit watching when the people making the rules keep reinterpreting their own rules every other week.

If they had just said "#20 suspended two races for conduct detrimental to the sport, he interfered with another competitor's ability to fairly compete when he was not contending for a race position with that competitor" and left it at that, I'd be like Ok, that's a fair call and fair explanation.

But to invoke "safety" and the seriousness of knocking out a Chase competitor, well then no one ever should be making any contact deliberately and they ought to just park everyone not in the Chase once the Chase starts.

Here is the question i have. Why doesn't Nascar issue penalties for certain types of behavior in the chase? For instance, "if we deem it to be that a driver purposely crashes out a chase driver, then the penalty will be this------" But no, we have to guess what penalties will be and maybe depending on who is driving the offending car.

I appreciate your effort of gaining that info. But the problem is that those were the rules from back in 2003. Teams gear up for the chase rules, including taking chances and testing for the chase. Teams would all approach the season differently if the rules were the same as before. However, I will say that the 24 probably deserved to win the Championship in 2007. Just like Joey or Kevin deserve to win it this year. But if they don't, the record book will only record who won.

TS the problem with having a rule for manipulating the championship is the lack of ways of proving or even knowing what a driver's intent was. You didn't have people manipulating before the Chase era because it was nearly impossible. It's too easy to do now with the points always being so close together. I feel like the champion for the year should have the overall best performance for THE YEAR, not just 10 or actually less then that now. It puts that much more emphasis on luck and manipulation. If you don't think the 24 deserved 2014: One cut tire at Texas took the title from the 24 last year. Lead the points all year, A 2nd at Martinsville, dominated the Texas race before the cut tire on a late restart thanks to Mouthlowski, then top 5 at Phoenix I think, then was leading at Homestead and pitted for some mysterious reason (to let the top 4 race for the win of course)........................................... .................................................. .................................................. .................Just seems to me they are right there with wrestling now. No integrity left at all.
