    Crash Controversy

I receive updates via e-mail from National Speed Sport News about a half dozen times a week. I just received one that highlights the Talladega Cup race and the article contained the concerns and thoughts of a couple of Cup drivers in regards to all the wrecking and cars taking flight.

One of the Childress grandkids seems to believe that something needs to be done to try to lessen the carnage and potential for driver injury. But, Brad Keselowski seems to think it's all a part of racing and there are people who attend or watch on TV that are drawn to the sport because of crashes.

I personally don't want to see crashes, I want to see good, hard, clean racing with the drivers and cars determining who wins, not crashes and/or dirty driving.

One point of view is that at the restrictor plate tracks the Cup drivers need to espouse to the open wheel doctrine of, race hard and close but seriously avoid coming in contact with another car.

I'm just wondering what you NASCAR aficionado's think about this. It's been a point of discussion for decades and most drivers don't want to compete at Daytona and Talladega.

Kurt "the head case" Busch even spoke of not running at Daytona in July because he hates restricor racing so much, but I'm betting that Stewart and sponsors will have something to say about that!

I wonder , for a guy that doesn't watch NASCAR and pretty much despises the organization, why would you even care?

And, yesterday, NASCAR said they were hard at work working on keeping the cars on the ground.... Can't ask for anything more then that.... no one was injured which attests to the safety of the race cars and personal protection of the drivers.... That race was a "perfect storm".... they didn't know when the rain was coming so they were racing for the win ever single lap... dam good race!!!

Racin , that was not racin. To wreck cars like that, thank the lord that no one was
hurt or killed . A group of 43 cars in a one second group all the way around the track,
waiting to shove another out of your way to take the lead , thats not talent , thats
stupidity . I mean i am not a Danica fan , but i do care if she was hurt or killed by close racin ,
to close . I like the speed , but something has got to give . That for sure is not talent
to win , thats luck that you made to the end so you could shoved, or be shoved out
of the way of the lucky -lucky winner. Nobody cares until some one is killed .
( That so far was the most stupidest race this year. )

Keep wonderin' muddy ol' buddie. LOL!

People like myself and many more care about racing in general. Most of the people we go to races and hang with don't give two $hits about NASCAR and their hyped up phony gimmicks and money grubbing BS. We care about real racing that is contested without all the NASCARish stupidity (Indy Car) and especially on dirt tracks without all the nonsense.

Unfortunately, the bad things that happen in NASCAR races, such as cars flying putting drivers and spectators lives in jeopardy and the wrecking and carnage reflects on real racing whether it's fair or whether we like it or not. What produces unfavorable publicity in NASCAR affects all genre's of racing.

It ain't fair but it's reality, nonetheless.

ALLDIRT, very good and factual post from start to finish but I sincerely doubt that you made any sense to the blind NASCAR loving folks who don't seem to care in the least about the welfare of drivers and spectators. I guess it'll take a driver fatality or two or three like it did back in 2000 and 2001 (see Blaize Alexander, Tony Roper, Adam Petty and arnhead) for the clown brigade that is NASCAR hierarchy to attempt to do something.

I do not like restrictor plate racing. They need to address the car speed in a number other ways. For Dega and Daytona only though.

What do you expect with cars going at that speed and all that close together?

Some writers tried to make the big one out to be totally over the top this time, saying drivers were staggering like drunks and falling to their knees, And as far as I could see, I don't think a single car took flight and flew away!

It seems to me they spin out too easily. A simple bump in the left rear and here they go. I think, from a racers standpoint, they need more rear down force but keep the spoiler up in the air. Im sure the air is very turbulent at those speeds but those bump and spins happen way too often.

Put Bias ply tires back on them you will have more car control and all the aero bull get the air going over and under like they used to and as for the restrictor plate problem it was this way before restrictor plate remember in 73 at Talladega they had a massive pile up took out about 25 cars I guess that was the first big one.

I'm not a crash fan, but that still was a good race... I don't want to see anyone hurt either, and guess what, no one was seriously hurt, Danica got an x-ray and AJ got a shot to the nads, other then that everyone just walked away... They've done yeoman's work in the area of safety...

                    Yep, totally agree.

As far as no one getting hurt or killed, it's a fact, that didn't happen.......................this time.

Here's what happened they tried to make the racing safer and they have made it worse. I'm not talking about anything to do with the (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)pit or the head and restraint or the safer barrier I'm talking about restrict plates

                      Your right CIRF this time

Valid point, Kid. The driver cocoon is infinitely safer than it has ever been in the history of racing. That is an incredible accomplishment given that the cars are faster these days than they've ever been. The softer walls are a substantial contributing factor to the overall safety equation, as well.

Kyle Larson's crash at Daytona a few years ago was one of the scariest things to happen at a racetrack and all the soft walls and driver protection would not have meant a thing if there had been a grandstand full of people on hand instead of just a smattering of spectators in the area where that crash took place.

The restrictor plates are a large part the problem and there is no simple solution without drastically changing the engine combination

Another top rate post ! How's this for an idea? Since the attendance is greatly down due the gimmickery etc , how about making everybody sit on the top rows only where a car cant possibly fly to and give them late model big blocks and let them have at it ? Talk about taking the gloves off !! Here's a gimmick that might actually plant azzes into the stands instead of driving them away with stupid stunts like the chase, green white checkers, cigar band yellows flags, and the like.
