I have been party to investigating some pretty horrific freight train accidents and collisions before I recently retired. Patience and respect for survivors and families is paramount. Accident investigation takes time, there are a lot of moving pieces and each detail no matter how major or minor must be confirmed in detail and ensured correct. It can be frustrating when no details are made public but there are reasons for that. Eventually it will come out. The most frutrating thing in my career was the misreporting by the media and the so called experts that sho up on internet sites and chat rooms. Fortunatly we had a Public Affairs Division that would work that end of it. I worked one accident where it took almost two years to conclude because of it's complxity. Early on the internet experts were blaming the train crew when in fact it wasn't anything they did wrong. I felt terrible for the crew and their friends and family.

We may all have different opinions on why but none of them really matter. It's just sad that he's gone and his last few years not very happy ones. I doubt we'll see his equal in entertainment and controversy again.

I've worked jointly with NTSB on many train accidents and knowing what I know about the investigations I would believe what is published. Sometimes thei outcome can be a little tough to swallow but our conclusions were factual. At times their recommendations for prevention can be a little off the wall but the accident conclusion can be believed.

Somewhere a few weeks ago (I think it was Derek Kessinger) someone tweeted the clip of driver intros from 2014 World 100 (windownetgate). Essex could not be heard over the noise. The booing & the cheering was SO LOUD. That night was Bloomer at Eldora encapsulated in one race. Highs, lows, drama & as usual there he was in victory lane when it was over. I was there for that one. Most memorable night at a race. No one in their right mind should have thought he was going to win when he went to the tail, but I bet 80% of the crowd there fully expected what ended up happening.

My wife got to witness her first eldora/bloomer moment in 2018 when he slipped and fell on the step of his hauler, dodged the drug test, and missed a whole prelim night. I told her he would somehow still win. She didn't believe me. The boos were pretty stout that night too. That was probably the last time we got to hear them be that loud.

I wasn't shocked at all when I heard the news. I could never see him as the old guy watching and maybe giving advice. There's no way it would satisfy his ego. He wasn't the type to go quietly.
