Its not bad for around this area.

Weekly SLMs are just about a thing of the past here, not enough to run weekly at most places.

Even A Mods are in the same boat, less than 8 to 10 shows at any local track around Cincinnati Area.

There are a few local Teams left that will run most of these that have a decent size operation, but probaly less than 8.

Crates are hanging on, but in about the same situation.

It would be nice to see a Monthly SLM show at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Race what you can afford. The biggest problem is racers thinking they need the latest and greatest stuff for their team like pit lifts. What happen to just spending a few bucks on jack stands instead of almost a grand plus on a pit lift. Drivers and teams need to learn to race within their means. Get my drift? If not, I can explain further.
No truer words we're ever spoken.

Some of these guys have more in these Haulers than most peoples Houses. I guess thats the nature of racing, its a wicked beast.

We had the most fun when we were racing broke, back in the pits looking for an old Saginaw power steering pump to run the Feature.

I’d much rather support this series at Montpelier than the National series where the winner is predictable.

Yet the Players will show up at Eldora for a “Tune up” race for a few more peanuts.

And Birky isn't racing anymore. A guy who keeps his expenses in line can race for this purse and have fun.

            2 pit passes =$60
            Night 2 of 4 used tires = $100
            20 gallons of e85 = $53
Laps towards next engine rebuild of affordable engine= $225

You haven't lost much money if you only get "start money"

Understood. Hopefully my point still came across genuinely.

Question for you as you are much closer to this data than most of us here on the forum.

In your estimation, how many grassroots DLM teams are still around this area for competition series like we are talking about?

Knowing I went to Montpelier this past summer for the BotB series and they had 27 cars I believe, and the racing was good IMO.

Thanks in advance for answering my question.

                  Lurker,

I'm not really sure how to make an accurate count, but I see no reason you couldn't get 25 cars at each event. The Ohio Valley Late model Series hits that number with some regularity and the pay is nowhere near as good.

I'm not sure how many of the guys running Iron Man or other similar series would choose to attend.

There are still a lot in eastern ky and wv. Look at how many showed up at WVMS.

Attica and oakshade get roughly 18 weekly, wayne county i think 13-15 and there cars have more options that direction on Saturday nights. A few attica cars race wayne county. Also back open is hilltop getting 13 cars or so which did take couple in end away from attica. Thats DLM racing north of US 30 (hilltop close enough to 30). With all that rambling said, if a series show close enough and teams aren't points chasing local track I feel you could get couple cars from each track of a race at any above mentioned race track. Example, attica, they get 16 cars pull couple down from oakshade and couple from WCS and couple from hilltop your already at 22 cars. You then possibly see say another 5 rom a bigger circle away like atomic or Michigan or somebody from Indiana.

MB, I gotta ask, how many you think in DLM running Ei5? 3 my buddy's running and theyre budgeted teams are still running 112 or 114. This E85 tjing intrigues me

Not a ton. Definitely some on the ohio Valley Tour. I smell it every once in a while. I've never understood why more don't run it. I understand if you just bought a $60k engine, you wouldn't do it. But I'm not sure why more budget guys don't.

It's simple to run and not a big deal at all. Just don't leave it in your carb for a couple months without racing.

Im gonna say because knowledge not there. We're trained when switched from ally to gas that needed 110, then 112, now 114 but one super local said he noticed absolutely nothing from 112-114 and he's raced like 4 decades. I've never smelt e85 that aware of. Guess should of asked to 97 what he ran since always had that 525. Whats .ax compression or hp/to for e85? I sure enjoyed running with steel block series but that travel too much. Kknda glad going aluminum but been nice stay steel block and hit n miss series shows in area. Toledo based though it's just a bit much

I've found varying compression numbers for what is ok with e85 when looking for information. Probably somewhere around 14:1. Compression is much more complicated than the static number calculated . We've run it in 415 ci LS engine, 23 degree 434, 18 degrees 415. Up to 13:1 in those engines. Never a problem at all.

Did McDowell run some sort of ethanol when they were using ECR engines? I remember that car having that ethenol smell to it back in those times.

We looked into trying E85 around here but our closest station is nearly 40 miles down the road and it's not far off the 91 octane price and have to go 'bout 100 miles over in Nevada to get the good stuff from VP but it runs almost the same as 110, which is $15-17 per gallon and burns more than the gas so that makes no sense. I do know a couple of guys, both who only run a couple of races a year, that run the pump E85 and they like it and don't seem to have any problems but don't know if they check the pump stuff for consistency, which I'm told is mandatory. A lot of our bunch are on alky but I don't care for all the maintainence issues. We experimented this season with blending pump 91 with the Torco booster and kicked the octane up to 102-105 and seemed to have no ill effects with power, mileage, heat, wear, etc. on a good fresh steel 404 12.5-1 engine. Also dropped our fuel bill about $7.50 per gallon. Running a series that pays $1-2K to win and $150 to start, involves a lot of travel with my 496, 8 mpg hauler and it makes a difference in how slowly I go broke.
