Too Many Classes-Hell Tour

It sure seems on the weeknights where they are running the late model & modified summer nationals for both classes should be 2 classes on the weeknights. When they go to the far reaching tracks where they aren't running the mods, 3rd class might be fine. I think Davenport had a couple classes but each only had like 10 to 15 cars so those go pretty quick typically. Wilmot was similar except the heats took forever in the support classes. Late models were still done before 10.

Basically the tracks in the hotbed (a FALS to Pevely circle basically) should be 2 classes on the weeknights cause all of those typically draw 30 plus of both classes. Ideally, Dirtcar would take the lead on this instead of just leaving it up to each track to decide. I don't blame the tracks one bit for trying to maximize their gate on the biggest night of the year for most of these tracks. Dirtcar seems to not care too much about the overall quality of the product & kind of lets each track do as they wish.

You're gonna give thanks to a track that was taking rubber during qualifying? I wasted two hours driving there. Got there and the track was hard, slick and looked like it had not been prepped till the day of. If that. In the feature, I'm not sure I saw one pass ANYWHERE. Just a train going in circles. It was a rock hard, dry slick, rubbered up, one groove track. Darkest track I've ever been too. Their attempted track prep was the water truck sprinkling water around the top. I'm sure they moved the LM feature up because rain was coming. It wasn't originally scheduled that way. Thankfully they did one thing right. Sad for the teams to have to race on that paved track.

I think the overall point is that Dirtcar (Driggers or whoever is calling the shots) needs to take a lot more ownership of the nightly presentation at the track. This includes what classes to run, what order to run them in, what time the pits should be open for teams traveling overnight & track prep.

Just within the Dirtcar organization, the WoO sprints run a show that they seem to control most all aspects of. They specify what (if any) support classes & the order of the program. Of course it can deviate based on weather or other factors but it seems to be a much tighter ship than the summernationals.

Seems the hell tour has evolved into a bit of a bloated thing where dirtcar is basically acting as the money changer in collecting the sanction fee each night & administering the tech at each track.

Some tracks run 5 classes on a Tuesday, some run 2. Some tracks run lm feature first. Others run the hornets & b mods before they get around to the main event. Some tracks are prepped & some take rubber halfway thru qualifying. Some tracks open the gates at 10pm the night before, others open them at 1pm the day of. Etc, etc.

Just doesn't make sense to me to slap your logo all over the event & then let large portions of how the program is run (which can greatly effect the spectator & participant experience) up to the whim of how each track wants to do things.

And if certain tracks can't meet the specified criteria, they probably don't need to be on the tour imo. The tour seems to hit the doldrums about the start of week 4 so it could use a bit of pruning anyway.

I don't think the Summer Nationals have the clout to be flexing like that these days.

Poppyc0ck. Most tracks take in more money with their SN date than they do with the rest of their schedule combined.

chathamracefan, just like me has been around this stuff a long,long time. He knows what he is talking about. Especially that last sentence! 21 nights IN A ROW should be it. PERIOD! Let the whole misnamed tour fall within UMP tracks that regularly run Late Models and Modifieds. ONLY! There has almost always been tracks outside of UMPland that had races, and years ago that was frequently a problem, for various reasons. Reign it back in to the UMP basics, two classes, leave it at $5,000 weeknights and $10,000 weekends. They would once again have tracks begging to be a part of the whole thing! Bob Memmer created this whole thing and he told me several times NO NIGHTS OFF! Give 'em a night off, they go home and maybe won't come back. And one thing I know for a fact is that Bob would definitely have a problem with the self-proclaimed nickname, while at the same time trying to lure young kids into the fold!
